As the novel opens, our protagonist, a young woman who is escaping this fort with nothing save the clothes on her back, a hatchet, a knife, and a metal cup, descends into the wilderness to try and outrun those who are pursuing her. “Lauren Groff sends us back to the 17th century, to a nascent English fort in the winter somewhere along the North Atlantic Coast beset with starvation and any number of deathly diseases. Which, for me, is all the hallmarks of an excellent story, well-told. Ander & Santi was that way for me (especially on audio Avi Roque is fantastic narrator) - I found I cared about both Ander and Santi, and was invested in their future together.

Fran Littlewood created something rare - a story that is relatable and surprising. Claire Skinner's narration is lovely in pacing and tone. This novel is full of ups and downs, humor and grief, the need for independence and connection - basically what makes us all human if we're honest with ourselves and others. “Whew! I had to listen all the way through in one weekend and I'm feeling big feelings! Grace Adams is amazing, and frustrating, and compelling, and discomfiting, and so relatable. “I’m not usually one for 'lighthearted' or 'delightful' books but this one is both and darned if i don’t absolutely love it! Maybe its the Saturday Night Live references, or maybe the fact that i literally laughed out loud a few times, but it might just be that I really kind of misses Sally and Noah when the story was done, but i really love this delightful lighthearted book!
